Released a year after the end of the American occupation of Japan, Kinuyo Tanaka's directorial debut explores the professional and personal conflicts of Reikichi, a repatriated veteran who searches for his lost love while translating romantic letters from Japanese prostitutes to American soldiers. Tanaka, an actress with an extensive resume and a regular presence in the films of some of Japan's greatest masters (notably Kenji Mizoguchi), achieves a very difficult melodramatic balance between the spoils of war and the survival of Japanese society's ways of life, with unusual aesthetic attention.
