The career of Portuguese artist Filipa César frequently brings together installation and cinema. In her commitment to resist colonialism, her work unfolds as a collective practice of sharing, memory, listening, and transformation. Alongside the exhibition dedicated to her by the Serralves Museum, this film programme intends to frame her work together with other filmmakers and cinematographies.

In this sense, this film programme reflects on the collaborative nature of Filipa César's work, in a cinema far removed from the closed world of individual authorship and closer to a kind of affective field where images, sounds, stories, voices, and gestures nourish and intertwine with one other. This collaborative axis quickly gives way to a constellation — ethical, aesthetic, thematic — with archives, cinemas, filmmakers, and communities, linking it to militant cinema produced in the former Portuguese colonies, the revolutionary and collective pedagogy of Cuban cinema, and the analytical sensibility of the European essay film.

Rejecting the label of retrospective or historical panorama, this film programme proposes a way of seeing Filipa César's cinema as a living and collaborative process. It is a series of encounters between films, practices, and generations that share a radical attention to the conditions of image production and their consequences in the world.

Curated by Amarante Abramovici and Pedro Crispim
