Curator-led Tour of the Exhibition Alice Neel
Alice Neel
WITH INÊS GROSSO
Free admission with a general admission ticket.

Led by Inês Grosso, curator of the exhibition, this tour offers an insight into the artistic world of Alice Neel (1900–1984), exploring the different dimensions of a body of work that places the human figure at the heart of her practice.
Drawing on the research undertaken for the exhibition, the curator will share her experience of conducting research in Vermont, where she gained access to the artist’s personal archive, including correspondence, photographs, books and other documents. The tour will explore the work of Alice Neel, whose career spanned several decades and reflected the social and political transformations of the 20th century: the Great Depression, the Second World War, the post-war period, the civil rights movement, the struggle for women’s rights and the gay liberation movement.
Organised into thematic sections, the exhibition establishes dialogues between different periods of Neel’s artistic practice. Her extensive body of portraiture is presented alongside research and documentary materials, including archival resources that connect her paintings to the social, political and emotional contexts in which she lived.
