Lisbon in the 1990s. Three siblings: two boys and a girl, Maria, the central figure of our story. She is twenty years old, but she cannot behave like most people her age. She almost never says what she thinks, nor does she ask for what she wants. She almost never tells the truth, though she never lies. She kills and does not say she killed. She suffers and does not say she suffered. She doesn’t want to be alone, but she doesn’t ask for company. She loves, but she doesn’t know whom she loves. She was born in Lisbon and has never been to—nor will she ever go to—another city. Maria wants to be with her siblings all the time, but she can’t, because the world wasn’t arranged that way. Maria wants to handle everything on her own. She wants to be strong, to take care of everyone. To keep all the secrets, her own and those of others. She can’t do it; the pain is too great, and she can’t bear it. The police are after her; she’s lost her job. She has to take care of her father; someone died, and she kept it a secret and handled everything on her own. In the end, Maria makes a decision. It’s a brutal and final decision. This story isn’t a happy one, but sometimes life is like that too.
