The visit by Professor Michael Padovik and his wife Hélène to the Arrábida convent, to consult documents proving Shakespeare’s Spanish ancestry, will be disrupted by the presence of Baltar, the convent’s sinister guardian. Oliveira builds the film’s increasingly ominous and spiritual tone using avant-garde orchestral compositions by Sofia Gubaidulina and Toshiro Mayuzumi, a frequent collaborator on Shohei Imamura’s films.
