Peter Greenaway's first feature film in fictional format and content, The Draughtsman’s Contract concerns an agreement that binds Neville, a young and arrogant designer, to Herbert and Virginia, a couple who recruit his services to make twelve drawings of their country estate. In addition to paying his fees, the contract also includes a sexual liaison between Neville and Virginia while her husband is away. But when the husband's body is found murdered, Neville's drawings contain mysterious clues that may help identify the killer. Although it has all the characteristics of a period mystery story, The Draughtsman's Contract is best known as the first major example of Peter Greenaway's excessive and baroque aesthetic, aided by Michael Nyman's music.
