Pier Paolo Pasolini | ITA, FRA, FRG | 1971 | 111’

The first film in the trilogy of life, Decameron is part of the final phase of Pier Paolo Pasolini's cinematic work, largely dedicated to fundamental authors and texts, beginning with this adaptation of Giovanni Bocaccio's Decameron. This was followed by Geoffrey Chaucer and his Canterbury Tales, The Thousand and One Nights, and finally, in a very different vein, The 120 Days of Sodom. Here, Pasolini adapts some of Boccaccio's tales, rendered in his profane and tactile aesthetic: a young Sicilian who is deceived but ends up rich, a man who pretends to be deaf and dumb in order to spy on a convent of nuns; three brothers take revenge on their sister's lover, and many more stories populate Pasolini's “comedy of life.”
