PAINÉIS DE VICENTE DE FORA - VISÃO POÉTICA
Manoel de Oliveira | POR | 2010 | 15'
No documentary was filmed about the Panels of St. Vincent. Instead, a fictional film was made that offers a new interpretation of the Panels’ composition—one among many existing interpretations—inspired by the current crisis and the growing dehumanization spreading throughout our country and, even more so, in certain other parts of Europe and the world. In short, it is a call for peace and a return to global tranquility, as explained. The Age of Discovery did not begin until after the polyptych was painted. Initiated by Portugal and completed by Spain, it left behind a comprehensive understanding of the universe, at a time when the “Home”—or the habitat—of all of us humans was still a mystery. (Manoel de Oliveira)
O CONQUISTADOR CONQUISTADO
Manoel de Oliveira | POR | 2012 | 14'
The statue of D. Afonso Henriques in Guimarães, besieged by armies of tourists armed with cameras.
O VELHO DO RESTELO
Manoel de Oliveira | POR, FRA | 2014 | 19'
A free and hopeless plunge into history as it is written—like fertile sediment—in the memory of Manoel de Oliveira. On a 21st-century bench, Oliveira brings together Don Quixote, the poet Luís Vaz de Camões, and the writers Teixeira de Pascoaes and Camilo Castelo Branco. Together, carried by the telluric movements of thought, they drift between the past and the present, defeats and glories, emptiness and alienation, in search of the unattainable star.
