Set in a palace of a strange high society, Os Canibais concerns the love triangle between the enigmatic Viscount of Aveleda, the maiden Margarida (whom the Viscount proposes to) and D. José, the maiden's suitor. The passionate and morbid plot creates a web of intrigue and revelations that, bordering on surrealism, leads all its characters to perdition. This grotesque film-opera is the result of the cinematic transposition of a 19th-century short story by Álvaro do Carvalhal, articulated between Oliveira's adaptation of the text and João Paes' libretto, inspired by it.
