The access to the Auditorium Casa do Cinema is via Rua de Serralves nº 873, 30 minutes before the screening.
In parallel with the exhibition, Manoel de Oliveira Photographer, the Casa do Cinema is presenting a film series that explores the tensions between the still and moving image. Cinema and Photography: Spectral Visions offers an insight into the different approaches and confrontations between these two means of expression, from the perspective of death, using Manoel de Oliveira’s film The Strange Case of Angélica as its starting point. In this film, a photographer is invited to take the picture of a recently deceased girl who seems to smile before the lens. On the basis of this episode, in which the immobility of death is ironically broken by the art of the still image, the programme proposes a path through the different ways in which spectrality animates the still image, thus serving as a forerunner to the cinematographic device itself. The programme includes more than twenty films, from Georges Méliès to Apichatpong Weerasethakul, that question the stability of the still image and inflate therein the phantasmatic movement of desire, fantasy, memory, and transcendence.
