19On September 19, 1931, the first film by Manoel de
Oliveira, Labour on the Douro River, premiered when he was only 22 years old. In 2021 we celebrate the 90th anniversary of this first
presentation and, as such, the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the
most acclaimed Portuguese filmmaker’s career. As a celebration, the
band Sensible Soccers has prepared a film-concert where they will
present a new score for Labour on the Douro River and The
Painter and the City (1956), to be held on September 19, at the Serralves Museum
Auditorium.
On September 18, at Casa do Cinema, it will be
presented a film programme dedicated the 1930s avant-garde cinema, showing two films that inspired Manoel de Oliveira to
become a director and that shaped his understanding of cinema
as an art form.
