Mika Vainio stands out in the field of modern electronic music as a representative of a movement which started to be felt around the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s and that was marked by the approximation and crossings between musical worlds until then thought to be distant or even incompatible.

In the project that brought Vainio international recognition, the duo Pan Sonic, we feel the inspirations of the 'industrial' sound of Throbbing Gristle, of Suicide’s electronic punk, of electroacoustic composers linked to academia, as well as of reggae, dub and their sound systems.

Vainio published solo work under his own name and under the pseudonym Ø, among others. He collaborated with important names in the music field such as Charlemagne Palestine, Alan Vega (dos Suicide), Stephen O`Malley, Keiji Haino, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Chicks on Speed, amongst others. Noteworthy is the work developed with the Finnish artist and composer Erkki Kurenniem, a pioneer in electronic arts. He also collaborated with filmmakers and visual artists such as Mika Taanila. Together with Tommi Grönlund he founded the record label Säkhö.

Vainio is among a relatively restricted group of artists who began to cross musical practice with installation practice, contributing to the expansion and strengthening of the field of sound art.

In a year in which Mika Vainio would have turned 60, a program is proposed that includes concerts, screenings and an installation, expecting it can constitute a tribute and also a promoter of retrospective looks that can assess the traces and ballast of Vainio’s notable oeuvre.
