'Twelfth screening in the film programme Manoel de Oliveira e o Cinema Português 3, held in conjunction with the third part of the exhibition of the same name. The screening will feature Pedro Costa’s “In Vanda’s Room” (1996), with the filmmaker in attendance to introduce the film.

Life has only thrown me a series of setbacks. Living in abandoned houses that other people left behind. I’ve been in houses that not even a witch would want to live in. But I’ve also been in houses that were worth it. Every house I’ve occupied was a squat. They were houses that people had abandoned, but if there had been a decent person there... they wouldn’t have torn them down. And look, it was like that, house after house. I’ve paid more for the things I didn’t do than for the things I did.

Pedro Costa

Nascido em Lisboa em 1959, largou os seus estudos em História para assistir a aulas do poeta e realizador António Reis na Escola de Cinema. A sua primeira longa-metragem, O Sangue, teve a sua estreia mundial no Mostra di Venezia de 1989. Casa de Lava, o seu segundo filme, rodado em Cabo-Verde, foi exibido no Festival de Cannes. Os seus outros filmes incluem Ossos, No Quarto da Vanda e Juventude em Marcha, que compõem a trilogia das Fontaínhas. Realizou ainda Onde Jaz O Teu Sorriso?, acompanhando o trabalho de Danièle Huillet e Jean-Marie Straub e Ne Change Rien com a actriz Jeanne Balibar. Integrou a longa-metragem colectiva Centro Histórico, a par de Manoel de Oliveira, Aki Kaurismäki e Víctor Erice. O seu mais recente filme Cavalo Dinheiro conta com um assinalável percurso internacional, tendo recebido um Leopardo de Ouro para Melhor Realização no Festival de Locarno de 2014.
