Taking a photograph involves more than simply recording what is in front of us. Between observing and making a photograph lies a succession of choices: where we position ourselves, what we include or leave outside the frame, how we use light, and the moment at which we decide to take the photograph.

The workshop begins with an introduction to the fundamental principles of photography — aperture, shutter speed and ISO — and the relationship between them. The aim is to understand how these choices can transform an image: controlling depth of field, freezing or suggesting movement, and responding to different lighting conditions.

In Serralves Park, these principles will be put into practice through guided exercises. Changing our point of view or what we include within the frame can produce very different results. The exercises will begin with observation of the space and the elements found within it, exploring different possibilities for constructing an image.

At the end of the session, each participant will select a small group of the images they have produced. Viewing and discussing them as a group will provide an opportunity to consider the different results, reflect on the choices made and discover other possibilities.
