44th session of the film series “Manoel de Oliveira and Portuguese Cinema 3,” held in conjunction with the third part of the exhibition of the same name. The session will feature a screening of Manoel de Oliveira’s The Strange Case of Angelica (2010), presented by professor and researcher Susana Viegas.

Isaac, a young photographer staying at a boarding house in Régua, is urgently summoned in the middle of the night by a wealthy family in town to take a final photograph of Angélica, a young woman who has just passed away only a few days after her wedding. At the house, where the family is preparing the wake, Isaac discovers Angélica and is struck by her beauty. As he prepares to take a photograph, and through the lens of his camera, the young woman seems to come back to life—just for him—and Isaac falls deeply in love with her. From that moment on, Angélica will “haunt” Isaac’s life to the point of exhaustion.
