FOCUS MAGUY MARIN

Maguy Marin, a pioneer of her generation and a major artist of contemporary dance, distinguishes herself by her choreographies, admittedly theatrical, of a political and interventional nature, which reflect the intransigence and convictions that define her personality.
Born in Toulouse in 1951, Marin studied dance at Mudra, the school created by Maurice Béjart, in Brussels, and was part of Les Ballets du XXe Siècle before founding, in 1984, the Compagnie Maguy Marin, currently based in Ramdam, an artistic center in the Lyon region. Among his most emblematic works are May B (1981), inspired by Samuel Beckett, Cendrillon (1985), Umwelt (2004) and Salves (2010), among many others.
Maguy Marin was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2016 for her long and remarkable artistic work.
The celebration of the artist and her work through a focus is presented by the programming of two iconic pieces from her repertoire, which reflect her interest in thinking about human complexity and social transformation: May B and Singspiele. These oeuvres address merciless and suffocating societies, but also states of loneliness, invisibility and absence.
The presentation of these pieces is joined by a workshop open to the artistic community and the lecture Repertoire(s), with the participation of Maguy Marin and the choreographer Lia Rodrigues, her former dancer, carried out as part of a collaboration with the Teatro Nacional de S. João.
The program aims to make known the magnitude and impact of her work, promoting the dialogue between creation, thought and sharing.
