SAAL - PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME

from 09 NOV 2014 to 01 FEB 2015
Six new projects, located inside and outside the museum, is the proposal of Serralves’ Performing Arts Service in order to reflect about the SAAL process. For its implementation, and in harmony with the programme’s spirit and practices, a multidisciplinary group has been formed, combining elements from the social sciences and the arts. This group, formed by the sociologist Luísa Veloso, the anthropologist Ligia Ferro, three musicians - Ana Luísa Veloso, Jorge Queijo and Pedro Augusto – and the stage director and director of the Companhia Teatro do Vestido, Joana Craveiro, and the visual artist and performer Marta Bernardes, worked together in the design and implementation of the performance-based proposals.
The working processes include, amongst other elements, identification and observation of place as an essential unit for the constitution of communities and the implementation of public participation strategies, thus evoking some of the operating principles of the SAAL process. Public presentations will be made in the Serralves Museum and Auditorium, and also the facilities designed within the SAAL process, such as the neighborhoods of Bouça and Leal, located in the centre of Porto.
The work of Joana Craveiro evokes residents’ memories and their life stories. Focusing on the neighbourhood of Leal, the work contributes to the "Living Museum of Small and Forgotten Memories ", that explores the recent history of Portugal and has been built by the Teatro do Vestido. In another neighbourhood, Bouça, Marta Bernardes and Jorge Queijo with "Composition for 128 homes," propose a performance interpreted by the residents of Bouça and divided into three movements, corresponding to the three main corridors of the neighborhood. Jorge Queijo will also perform a multimedia concert-performance featuring the manipulated music of Iannis Xennakis, architect and composer who forges a close connection between music and architecture in the creative process, from a documental vision of the popular movement in the SAAL process, developed by the architect Alexandre Alves Costa. On this occasion with the participation of Ghuna X. Ana Luísa Veloso, using a set of guitars, proposes to create an "ecosystem" that will explore the relationships and interactions established from several initial sound / musical ideas, performed by two musicians / performers. The work of Pedro Augusto proposes an installation consisting of a modular wooden frame, which portrays the life of a housing block of a SAAL neighbourhood and its movements.
