SOME CAME RUNNING

Vincente Minnelli | USA | 1958 | 137'

Dave (Frank Sinatra), a former writer, returns to his small town in the American Midwest after serving in the Army during World War II, much to the chagrin of his ambitious brother. He befriends a laid-back professional gambler and finds himself torn between two very different women. Celebrated for his expansive and sunny musicals, Vincente Minnelli has another, more dramatic and tragic dimension to his work, and ‘Some Came Running’ is one of its highlights: a film built on layers of deep sadness, with a large part of it attributed to the actors. From Frank Sinatra's brutal and lonely behaviour to Shirley MacLaine's tragic complexity, to Dean Martin as a drunken vagrant, this constellation of characters acts as a catalyst for tension in a narrative that, despite being based on James Jones' long novel, has a sparse character with immense sentimental depth.
