FOR THE FIRST TIME | LA GRAMMAIRE DE GRAND-MÈRE | RECONSTRUÇÃO, EDUCAÇÃO | UN BALCON EN AFRIQUE
CINE-KIN

Second session of the film programme Cine-Kin: Filipa César et al., running parallel to the Meteorizações exhibition. This screening will feature Octávio Cortázar's For the First Time (1967), Jean-Pierre Bekolo's La Grammaire de Grand Mère (1996), the Guinean filmmakers' collective Reconstrução, Educação (1976), and Anita Fernández's Un Balcon en Afrique (1980).
Offering an overview through practices, generations, and production contexts that, while very different, converge on the same type of ethical, aesthetic, or thematic concerns, this cycle reflects on a cinema that does not merely seek to describe the world, but above all to act upon it. It is, above all, a series of encounters that share a radical attention to the conditions of image production and their consequences in the world.

Reconstruction, Education documents the meeting in Bissau of the Ministers of Education of the various former Portuguese colonies, which was also attended by educators from the various countries. The meeting took place between February 15 and 24, 1978, with delegations from Guinea, Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor participating. The film reveals how education was then considered a “fundamental battlefront” for the progress and affirmation of the new nations, prolonging the solidarity manifested between the various countries during the struggle for national liberation.

A Balcony in Africa, made in collaboration with local filmmakers, features a white European woman who lives in a tree house in Bissau and observes what is happening on the ground, a metaphor for the situation of European activists visiting post-independence Africa."
