Eighth session of the Film and Talks Programme Um Filme Falado: Oliveira e a História do Cinema, conceived and moderated by Anabela Mota Ribeiro. This programme, dedicated to the relationship between various significant moments and trends in the history of cinema and the work of Manoel de Oliveira, continues with the theme of Musical, with a screening of Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen's Singin' in the Rain (1952). After the screening, there will be a conversation with composer and musicologist Daniel Moreira and filmmaker João Rosas, moderated by Anabela Mota Ribeiro.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

A fundamental title of the classic American musical, Singin’ in the Rain is the product of a series of songs by Arthur Freed, transformed into a parade of color and movement by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly. Referring to the transition from silent to sound, the film is a behind-the-scenes of the Hollywood context, in which a couple of stars from the silent era try to adapt to the new reality by starring in a major sound production. The almost non-stop succession of musical numbers turns Singin’ in the Rain into one of the best examples of the “integrated dance musical”, the second and most popular trend in the genre, which emerged in the 1930s and would become dominant in the decades to come.
