Opening session of the film programme Projecto SER film: Mental Health, Stigma and Resilience. The project is developed by professionals in the fields of health, culture, education and social communication, and proposes a space for reflection on mental illness and the stigmas that surround it, promoting dialogue between science, health and society.

The film series begins on 10 October, World Mental Health Day, with a screening of Sidney Lumet's Equus (1977), which will be presented by professor emeritus and researcher Mário Barbosa.

A psychiatrist, Martin Dysart, investigates the savage blinding of six horses with a metal spike in a stable in Hampshire, England. The atrocity was committed by an unassuming seventeen-year-old stable boy named Alan Strang, the only son of an opinionated but inwardly-timid father and a genteel, religious mother. As Dysart exposes the truths behind the boy’s demons, he finds himself face-to-face with his own. The dramatic intensity of the film is masterfully handled by Sidney Lumet, whose mastery in directing actors and managing raw conflicts contributes to the brilliance of ‘Equus’.
