Rational, demanding, and self-controlled, director Henrik Vogler usually stays at the theater after rehearsal to think and plan. On this day, Anna returns, apparently looking for a bracelet. She is the lead in his new production of Strindberg's “A Dream.” She will talk about her hatred for her now deceased mother, an alcoholic actress who was Vogler's star and lover, in what will be the beginning of a silent confrontation between actress and director. Constantly haunted by the ghost of the theater, Ingmar Bergman's cinema has always harmonized the logic between the two arts, pontificating, in the process, a rigorous actor's work. In this film, Bergman reunites with two of his most regular and iconic actors: Erland Josephson and Ingrid Thulin.
