This colourful and poignant musical by George Cukor is the second version of A Star is Born produced by the American system: it follows the first - A Star is Born (1937) by William A. Wellman with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March - and spawned the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, and the 2018 version with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Cukor's version maintains its dramatic conflict in the efforts of James Mason, an alcoholic film star, who helps the young Judy Garland, an aspiring singer, through the treacherous twists and turns of fame and show business. George Cukor's special talent for directing actors brings out an extensive and complex range of emotions, where the spectacular nature of the sensations never manages to mask the emotional melancholy of his leading pair.
