Echo Moiré (2011) is a robotic opera-ballet in which a pair of loudspeaker vehicles is employed to play a room as a musical instrument. Exploring the acoustic properties of the room, the vehicles create aural images that float in the air, enveloping listeners with patterns of echoes rebounding off the walls.
The work is inspired by Alvin Lucier’s 1968 composition Vespers and investigates human echolocation, aural spatial perception and the physics of sound. Using mobile directional loudspeakers emitting trains of pulses, the trajectories followed by sound waves from source to listener are made apparent. Gradually scanning the room’s boundaries, aural images of the space are formed. Modulating the pulses over time, these images are manipulated and sculpted, giving rise to different spatial forms, textures and densities in which the audience is immersed. Staging forms of interaction that alternate between the two poles of attraction and threat, the piece activates a referential mode of listening rooted in instincts of navigation and survival.
Echo Moiré was conceived and developed under the artistic guidance of Edwin van der Heide at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (2009-2011). It was further developed during residencies at Studio Loos (The Hague), STEIM (Amsterdam), Signal Raum (Munich), STUK (Leuven) and De Fabriek (Eindhoven) with financing from Stroom Den Haag and The Performing Arts Fund NL

Matteo Marangoni is an artist and community organiser interested in sonic rituals, DIY media and applied utopianism. His artistic practice focuses on creating spatial experiences probing the relationship between subject and object. As organiser he coordinates the program of iii (instrument inventors initiative) and curates the performance series No Patent Pending.
Matteo Holyoke Marangoni was born in Florence in 1982 in a mixed Italian and American family of artists. He studied music performance, sound engineering and cultural management, before receiving a masters diploma from the ArtScience Interfaculty in The Hague in 2011.
In his art practice he focuses on creating sensory experiences that connect sound, space, image and the body. His performances and installations present physical processes, sensory phenomena and machines in ways that are both musical and theatrical. He makes use of DIY electronics, digital systems, architectural spaces, media archives, automation, robotics, explosives, humans and storytelling. With these elements he composes poetic rituals addressing the space between subject and object, materiality and transcendence, the absurd, curiosity, invention, contemplation, identity, fear and ridicule.
Through his curatorial work he places his experience in the field of art and technology, sound art and performance at the service of cultural organisations. As a community organiser he initiates and supports grass roots initiatives promoting the field of art and technology, facilitating cooperation amongst artists and advocating for the position of artists within society.
He has exhibited and performed at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, (Madrid) Audio Art Festival (Krakow), Akademie Der Kunst (Berlin), Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Artefact Festival at STUK (Leuven), NIME at Goldsmiths University (London), Signal Raum (Munich), Triennale di Milano.
