A fundamental work of modern cinema, of the dawn of neorealism and the landscape of Italian and world cinema, Rome, Open City is set in the Italian capital during the Second World War, where underground resistance leader Manfredi tries to escape from the Gestapo, with the help of Pina, the fiancée of a fellow resistance member, and Don Pietro, the priest who will oversee his wedding. But it isn't long before the Nazis and the local police find him. The confluence of these stories is the starting point for Rossellini's next explorations, which would give rise to the so-called ‘war trilogy’, with Paisà (1946) and Germany, Year Zero (1948).
