The term "bryophyte” derives from the Greek words, "bryon" (moss) and "phyton" (plant), and is therefore essentially used for the group of terrestrial plants, commonly called mosses. In addition to many other functions, these small living sponges, together with lichens, are effective biological antennae for air pollutants. Let us explore this and other curiosities of bryophytes and lichens, including some of their uses over history, such as for medicine, food, paint or perfumes.
