After last month’s session, which focused on saltwater fish, we swim upstream and concentrate on freshwater fish and the many threats they face today.
Since 2013, Filipa Filipe has worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CIBIO-InBIO.
She has a B.Sc degree in Biology from the University of Lisbon, and developed her PhD in the Ecology of Freshwater Fish at the same University and in partnership with the University of Virginia (U.S.A.). During her PhD she focused on the patterns of stocks and composition of freshwater fish in the Iberian Peninsula. After completing her PhD, she worked for three years at the University of Barcelona and in 2013 she joined CIBIO-InBIO where she has studied the ecology and biogeography of freshwater fish (in the Iberian Peninsula and Africa). Her research is directed to the study of freshwater fish living in rivers and streams. On the one hand, she is interested in describing the existing level of diversity, and, on the other hand, to study the effect of human activities on species survival , from the impact of climate change to the establishment of non-native species. She is also currently developing methodologies for the evaluation and monitoring of rare, invasive or highly-endangered species of fish, and the biological quality of freshwater, based on environmental DNA.
