Luís Lopes has long been one of the most interesting and active improvisers in Lisbon’s dynamic scene. With a growing international recognition and a constant presence on international stages, he is involved in multiple projects that focus on equally multiple languages and aesthetics. For this concert, Lopes will present a facet more directly linked to jazz improvisation, a strong and clearly assumed personal root, and joins two other remarkable figures, drummer João Sousa and veteran bassist Hernâni Faustino, musicians who are guarantees of intensity and uncompromising delivery. The second concert of the day is probably the most expected of the event – a first encounter between two top figures of New York’s avant-garde jazz, Tony Malaby and Michael Formanek, and celebrated Portuguese drummer João Lencastre. Saxophone, double bass and drums form a constellation of creativity, boldness, innovation and pure energy. The stage at the tennis court will see a ‘downtown’ re-enactment of some of the most expressive and freer jazz being made today.
