Material Evidence

With a rigorous selection of works by Aria Dean, Cameron Rowland, Hugo Flores and Paulo Mariz, Nour Mobarak, P. Staff, Sara Deraedt and Tarik Kiswanson, all these artists have in common the materiality of history and the way in which objects are vehicles for social constructions and identity. Using sculpture, painting, film and installation all these artists, from different cultural contexts and geographies: Lebanon and Greece, the United States, Sweden, Paris and Palestine, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Belgium, present us with singularly different works, but all of which have in common an interest in the material.
Their work, one way or another, examines and takes stock of personal histories, the formation of memories, entropy and aggregation of identities, the granularity of information, the nature of estrangement and the reorganization of the ordinary, and a re-evaluation of knowledge.
All these artists share the need and the attempt to critically intuit our time, the history we make and the traces we leave.
Produced by the Serralves Foundation – Museum of Contemporary Art Porto, the exhibition is curated by Philippe Vergne, the Museum Director and is coordinated by Filipa Loureiro, the coordinator of temporary exhibitions.
