Guided tour to Oscar Murillo’s exhibition Together in Our Spirits, by Jorge Malheiros, geographer and researcher at the Center for Geographic Studies at the Institute of Geography and Territorial Planning at the University of Lisbon.
Oscar Murillo's exhibition Together in Our Spirits, on display at the Serralves Museum, presents different prisms of the work of the artist, expressing the fluid transition between individual production and collective meaning.
Although Murillo emphasizes drawing as a core element, the exhibition embraces various artistic expressions, highlighting the production of functional pieces and the use of simple materials that go beyond a specific aesthetic sense. Works such as Frequencies reflect an aesthetic consideration of dialogue and collective contributions. Murillo's own experience of spaces, journeys, and non-places extends this idea, but a Latin American influence is evident through traditional elements and interpretations of ritual and religiosity. The recognition of communities and identities emerges as a message of dialogue with the world, denying a closed localism. Arepas y Tamales is a reference to Latin America but combines elements from different geographies. Murillo also addresses social inequalities and concerns for vulnerable groups, criticizing indifference and lack of intervention.
Murillo's exhibition proposes a journey based on Social Geography references, seeking to convey strong messages in a permanent dialogue with society. (JM)
