One of the fundamental principles behind the conception of the exhibition To Whom It May Concern: A Collection, A Letter was, as the title suggests, the conviction that exhibitions and epistolary exchanges can be equivalent. The selection and reading of letters that we are now proposing aims to give a voice to some of the artists in the exhibition - a voice exemplified in the correspondence exchanged with other artists, curators, or simply with friends and family.
This selection was guided by the desire to show the variety of approaches to the epistolary format and the subjects dealt with, ranging from reflections on art in general and its practices in particular to the complex relationships between art and institutions, as well as everyday issues that exemplify the much discussed and claimed link between art and life. Based on letters written by Sol Lewitt, Lawrence Weiner, Helena Almeida, and Marlene Dumas, or sent to Lourdes Castro and Ana Jotta, we will expand the ways of "reading" and interpreting their work. And - very important in times when the discourse on art seems to come exclusively from curators or essayists - through their words, in the first person!
