2209 SERRALVES S+T+ARTS TALKS
Still MICRO | MACRO (cortesia do artista).

The work is an immersive installation that tries to reproduce nature – digitalized from the Planck scale (10 -35 m) to the human scale and the

cosmological scale, beyond the observable universe (over 10 26 m) – and explore our potential to perceive and experience the infinitesimally small or the infinitely vast domain of nature from the perspective of the Planck scale (units): a fundamental way of measuring nature based on natural physical constants.

Ryoji Ikeda, 2020

With Philippe Vergne, Paula Fernandes and Ricardo Bravo (Serralves Foundation), Nuno Brandão Costa (Brandão Costa Arquitectos, Lda), Rui Ribeiro (Amplitude Acoustics), Carlos Manuel Oliveira (Amorim Cork Insulation), Luz e Som, Luís Girão (on behalf of the European Commission) and moderated by Luís Teixeira (Escola das Artes, UCP).

MICRO | MACRO

The invitation to Ryoji Ikeda to conceive a temporary pavilion for the Serralves Park is in line with a continuous practice of inviting artists to create and install works within Serralves’ natural heritage. With the collaboration of Porto architecture studio Brandão Costa Arquitectos, this project was also supported by other entities, which contributed to the construction of a unique space.

Amorim Cork ensured that the whole inner wall lining was made with cork panels and coconut fibre to create an acoustically exceptional pavilion. Luz e Som ensured the

installation of the cutting-edge technology which the presentation of the work called for.

Ryoji Ikeda (1966, Gifu, Japan), is a major Japanese electronic composer and visual artist who explores the essential characteristics of sound and visual elements. Ikeda is one of the few international artists who are able to convincingly work on the intersection between the sonic and the visual universes: he elaborately orchestrates sound, visual materials, physical phenomena and mathematical notions in live performances and immersive installations.

The piece in this installation reflects the culmination of eighteen years of work and is of particular significance to the artist as he shares it with visitors and transforms the visit into a unique, complete experience.

In conceiving the work, which took over a year to complete, the artist and his collaborators developed intense and deep scientific and technological research. To install the piece, the artist and his long-time collaborator came to the Museum to test the material installed beforehand and fine-tune the presentation over the course of several days.

The aim of this encounter is to emphasise the importance of partnerships in bringing to fruition a complex and innovative project and to bring together specialists from various fields.

The presentation of the work MICRO | MACRO in Serralves was only possible thanks to the synergy between all partners involved and whose different interventions should be highlighted.

This project had the indispensable support of the STARTS programme.

Communications will be in Portuguese.
