MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA AND PORTUGUESE CINEMA 1

19 MAR – 18 JUN

Auditorium, Casa do Cinema

Between 1929, the year in which Manoel de Oliveira started shooting his first film Douro, Faina Fluvial [Labour on the Douro River], and 1969, the year in which the first Portuguese filmmakers’ cooperative was founded, the CPC — Centro Português de Cinema [Portuguese Cinema Center], four decades passed and with them came huge changes in the way cinema was made in the country. Cinema went from silent to sound, from black and white to color, from 35mm nitrate film to celluloid in different formats and from optical to magnetic sound. With each of these technological advances came new aesthetic models, from film propaganda to industrial documentaries, from urban symphonies to ethnographic cinema, from the so called “golden age Portuguese comedies” to neorealism, and from there to auteur cinema. Each of these changes brought new formal and narrative possibilities, of which Manoel de Oliveira was systematically one of the pioneers among us, as well as new ways of presenting cinema (consider the strengthening of the film club movement from the 1950s onwards). This film series presents the scarce film production of Oliveira during the Estado Novo dictatorship, always in dialogue with the rest of national production, seeking to establish bridges between works that either are historical and aesthetic milestones in Portuguese cinema historiography, or stem from personal and political affinities between the creators. All sessions will be preceded by a presentation, in Portuguese, by a researcher in the field of Portuguese cinema history.
