Opening: 6 may at 5:30 pm
The work of Erwin Wurm (Bruck an der Mur, Austria, 1954) questions the basic principles of sculpture, focusing on the interaction between the human body and everyday objects. Sarcasm and humour, as well as the use of vibrant colours and anthropomorphic forms, are recurring aspects in the artist’s work. Beyond its playful character, Wurm’s practice is critical of Western thinking and lifestyle, drawing mainly on his childhood experiences in post-war Austria.
Two works are shown at Palácio da Bolsa: Wurm's sculpture Psycho 7 (Blue) (2010) from the Leal Rios collection, as part of a long-term loan to the Serralves Foundation; and the book Peace & Plenty (2018), which brings together 447 images of diagrams, drawings, paintings and interventions on photography that the artist produced from the late 1990s to 2017.
In parallel with this exhibition, another remarkable sculpture by Erwin Wurm is presented at the Arrivals Hall of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, thus connecting two important locations in the
city of Porto.
