This film is an adaptation of the Vicente Sanches' play of the same name on the incommunicability of the haute bourgeoisie. It takes place in a manor house in Portalegre: Vanda is a young woman who loathes her husbands while they're alive, but ends up venerating them once they're dead. ""It is a play full of black humour and elegant dialogues, of a disquieting ambiguity, that triggers bewilderment and hesitation, as we can't understand if its author wants to have fun or to speak gravely"" (Manoel de Oliveira).
